5 Tips to Get Rid of Yellow Teeth | DiMaggio Dental (2024)

Sep 01, 2020

Over time, changes in your teeth color are bound to happen. As you grow older, your teeth will tend to yellow or darken. This is caused by the wearing away of the outer enamel that exposes the dentin layer underneath.

If you want to whiten teeth, there are several conventional methods you can choose from. However, you should be cautious when using at-home whitening products as they may damage your teeth if used incorrectly or for a very long time. They may wear away an enormous amount of the enamel, making you susceptible to cavities and sensitivity.

This article explores some of the natural ways you can use to get rid of yellow teeth.

Brush Your Teeth

You should not only brush regularly but also in the right manner. It is particularly important to brush your teeth after consuming beverages and drinks that may have a staining effect. After consuming acidic drinks and foods, you should not brush immediately as this makes the acids eat away the enamel leading to erosion.

Brush for at least two minutes twice daily and make sure your toothbrush gets into all the crevices and cracks. To protect your gums, brush in a circular motion- on the inside, outside and teeth chewing surfaces.

A 2018 study revealed that using whitening toothpaste can whiten your teeth. These kinds of toothpaste have mild abrasive that are tough on surface stains while being gentle enough for safety. For better results, use an electric brush to remove surface stains.

Use Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda

Using this mixture removes bacteria and buildup of plaque to get rid of surface stains. Create a hydrogen peroxide and baking soda paste and use it to brush your teeth. After that, use water to rinse the mouth.

You can also create a mouthwash using equal amounts of each ingredient. Alternatively, you can make a water and baking soda solution. A study conducted in 2012 showed that individuals who used toothpaste with peroxide and baking soda as ingredients got rid of stained teeth in about six weeks.

Oil Pulling

This procedure is known to remove bacteria and plaque from your mouth, helping make your teeth whiter. The most commonly used oil is coconut oil. Make sure you purchase organic oil of high quality that contains zero harmful ingredients. You just have to swish two teaspoons of coconut oil in the mouth for about 30 minutes.

The oil shouldn’t touch the back of your throat. Also, do not swallow it because it has bacteria and toxins from the mouth. Instead, spit it into a waste bin or toilet because it can clog drains.

Afterward, thoroughly rinse the mouth using clean water and drink water before brushing your teeth. Although there is no scientific evidence to back up the teeth-whitening property of oil pulling, a study conducted in 2015 revealed that using sunflower oil and sesame oil to oil pull reduced gingivitis brought about by plaque. Therefore, oil pulling could whiten your teeth as the buildup of plaque could cause teeth yellowing.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Used in small amounts, apple cider vinegar could whiten your teeth. Mix two apple cider vinegar teaspoons with water and swish the resulting solution in your mouth for about 30 seconds. After that, rinse your mouth with water and start brushing your teeth.

However, it is important to note that this ingredient could damage your teeth’s surface structure and hardness. So, caution should be taken not to use it for prolonged periods.

Activated Charcoal

Yes, activated charcoal can do wonders on stained teeth. Because of its high absorbency, charcoal is believed to remove stains and pigments from teeth. It can also remove toxins and bacteria in your mouth. Several kinds of toothpaste contain activated charcoal.

Open a capsule containing activated charcoal then spill the contents on a toothbrush. After that, brush in circles for about two minutes. It would be best if you were particularly careful in the area surrounding the gums because of the abrasive nature of activated charcoal. When you’re done, spit the activated charcoal out. For those with sensitive teeth, just dab it on them and wait for about two minutes.

Alternatively, you can create a mouthwash by mixing water with activated charcoal. Swish the solution in your mouth for about two minutes before spitting it out. Afterward, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.
