Luther Edward Steele - May 22, 1929 - December 30, 2023

Departed: 12/30/2023 (Midland)

Obituary Preview: Luther Edward Steele of Midland, Tx peacefully passed away in Dallas, Tx on December 30, 2023. He was born in Crystal Falls, Tx outside of Breckenridge, Tx in May of 1929. Luther married Dorothy Jean Steele and they were together until she passed in 2004. In 2005, Luther married Ollie Dorton and they were together until she passed in 2018.

Faith was always important to Luther. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Midland on A Street. Even though he moved to Dallas in 2015, his church home was always Hope Lutheran. He loved working with his hands and especially with wood. When he moved into Assisted Living in Dallas, people were stunned that he had an air compressor, scroll saw, drill press, router and many other power tools in his apartment that he shared with his Chihuahua Chief Little Dog. He was so skilled that when Hope Lutheran needed a replacement cross for the sign to the East of the sanctuary, they asked Luther to build it. Now, anyone passing Hope Lutheran can look at the cross on the sign and think of Luther.

He loved games and anything that challenged his brain. As a child of the Great Depression, he collected and used things that others did not have a use for. His creativity was outstanding. Before joining the Army, he was a “cowpuncher” on the family farm near Possum Kingdom Lake. Luther was a Military Policeman during the Korean War, stationed in Hawaii. He was also a milkman for Borden back when milk was delivered to your door. He retired from the United States Postal Service, Midland Main Station, where he was a clerk. Everyone that met Luther immediately fell in love with his humor, good nature and dedication to family and everyone he loved.

He will be missed by his daughter Debbie Steele Lemon, and husband, Richard of Carrollton, Tx; Grandson Trevor Lemon of San Antonio, Tx; Granddaughter Taylor Lemon of Innsbruck, Austria, and husband, Karsten; 4 Great-grandchildren; Trevor Jr and Allison of San Antonio, Tx; Collin and Liam of Innsbruck, Austria.

It is often published in newspapers and online as a way to inform friends, family, and the community of the individual's passing and to celebrate their life.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age at the time of death, the date and place of their passing, a summary of their life achievements, details about the family they leave behind, information about the funeral or memorial services, and sometimes a photo.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, funeral directors, or newspaper staff. Occasionally, individuals even write their own obituaries in advance to ensure that the information conveyed is how they want to be remembered.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in local newspapers, but it's increasingly common to see them posted online through social media, dedicated memorial websites, and the online versions of newspapers. Some people also issue obituaries through funeral home websites.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a difference. A death notice is a simple, factual announcement of a person's death, often limited to the name, age, and information about the funeral services. An obituary is more detailed and includes a biography and personal details about the deceased.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Whether to include the cause of death is a personal choice. It is not required, and the decision should be based on what the family feels comfortable with sharing. There is no right or wrong decision, and families should respect the deceased's wishes if known.

What is the average length of an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary widely but typically ranges from a few brief paragraphs to a full column or more. The length often depends on the amount of space available in the publication and the extent of the deceased's life accomplishments and family connections.

How can I personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, you may include details such as personal anecdotes, the deceased's hobbies, interests, passions, and any notable accomplishments. You can also mention their unique qualities, favorite quotes, or messages they wished to pass on.

Is it necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary?

It is not necessary to hire a professional; however, some people choose to do so to ensure the obituary is well-written and captures the essence of the deceased. Many funeral homes offer obituary writing services, but family members often write them as a personal tribute.

Can an obituary be too long?

It is possible for an obituary to be overly long, which might lead to higher costs if being paid for by the word in a newspaper and potentially lose the reader's attention. It's important to strike a balance between honoring the deceased and keeping the writing concise.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is usually published within a few days of the death to promptly inform the community and allow for funeral arrangements to be made. However, it can be published later if the family wishes to spend more time on the writing or wait for a public memorial service.

What should be done if an error is found in an obituary after publication?

If an error is found after publication, most newspapers and online platforms will allow a corrected version to be published. It's best to contact the publication or website immediately to arrange for the necessary changes.

Can anyone submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Yes, typically anyone can submit an obituary to a newspaper; however, the paper may require proof of death, such as a death certificate, to prevent fraudulent submissions. There may also be a fee based on the length of the obituary and whether a photo is included.

Are there any legal requirements when publishing an obituary?

How can one find an old obituary?

Can obituaries be published for people who die abroad?

Are there different cultural practices regarding obituaries?

Does an obituary need to have a photograph?

While a photograph is not a requirement, many families choose to include a picture of the deceased to add a personal touch. The decision to add a photograph depends on the family's preferences and sometimes the cost, as some publications charge extra for photo inclusion.

Is it okay to add humor to an obituary?

If humor was a defining characteristic of the deceased, or if they specifically requested it, incorporating humor into an obituary can be appropriate. However, this should be done tastefully, keeping in mind the sensitivities of those who are grieving.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary depending on the length, the publication's pricing structure, and whether a photograph is included. Many newspapers charge by the word or line, while others have a flat fee. Online obituary postings can sometimes be less expensive or even free.

How can I ensure the obituary is a proper tribute?

To ensure the obituary is a proper tribute, engage family and friends in the writing process, gather key facts and special memories, and ensure the tone reflects the personality and life of the deceased. If uncertain, it might be helpful to have a professional writer or someone not as closely connected to the deceased read it for objectivity.
