If you need a simple treat that everyone goes crazy over, it’s OREO BALLS! They’re super easy to make and they taste incredible. You can top them with Oreos and a swirl of chocolate like I do here, or you can be festive and top with holiday sprinkles.

Oreo Balls Recipe with Cream Cheese

Only 3 ingredients for an amazing bite sized, no-bake dessert! All you have to do is crush up the Oreo cookies and mix them with the cream cheese and then shape the mixture into balls. Freeze the balls for about 20 minutes and then dip them in melted chocolate. For this recipe, I chose to use vanilla almond bark, but you could also use regular semi-sweet chocolate if you prefer that.

What’s that 3 pronged fork you use to dip your Oreo Cream Cheese Balls?

The 3 pronged fork I use to dip each Oreo Ball is ahandy Wilton Dipping tool. It’s part of a 3 piece set that make it so incredibly easy to dip candy, or cookie truffles like these, in chocolate.

What chocolate is best for dipping?

When making candy like this I really find thatdipping chocolate just works best. However, you can use chocolate chips instead. I find it works best when you add a small amount – about 1/2 tsp- of shortening or coconut oil to the chocolate chips when you melt them in the microwave.

How do you melt chocolate in the microwave?

Melting chocolate in the microwave is easy if you go slowly. Always use a glass or ceramic bowl and chocolate that’s not old. To melt 1 cup of chocolate chips I’d begin with 1 minute in the microwave. After the 1 minute, let chocolate sit for 2-3 minutes. Then, gently stir and see if chocolate begins to melt smooth. If it’s still really solid, add 20 seconds in the microwave, then let it sit again. Often chocolate looks like it’s not melted when it really is, and you don’t know for sure until you gently stir it. If your chocolate melts but it’s too thick to work with, try adding 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening, then letting it melt and stirring it in.

Oreo Balls Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make our classic Oreo Balls:

  • 1 package OREO Cookies, finely crushed (15.25 oz. pkg) (reserve 1 cookie for sprinkling on top of completed Oreo Balls)
  • Cream cheese, softened (to soften, you can either let it sit on the countertop for an hour or two, or you can microwave a clean wet cloth for 30 seconds, then wrap the cream cheese in it and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Repeat if necessary, until cream cheese is soft.
  • Melting chocolate, white chocolate and semi-sweet

How to Make Oreo Balls

Here’s how to make Oreo Balls:

Crush the OREO cookies

I used a blender, but you can use a small food processor, or you can place the cookies in a sealed plastic bag and smash them with a meat mallet! I found that the blender worked best when I did half the cookies at a time, rather than trying to crush all 36 at once. Use a fork to stir the mixture up between blends to get the finest consistency.

Combine with Cream Cheese

Mix the crumbs with the cream cheese until well blended.

Scoop Oreo Balls

Use a cookie scoopto measure out about 1.5 TBSP of the cookie mixture and roll each scoop into a ball. Place Oreo balls on a parchment or wax paper lined cookie sheet.

Chill to retain shape

Freeze the balls for about 20-30 minutes before dipping. Don’t skip this step! The balls need to be chilled before you dip them in the melted chocolate. If they aren’t chilled, you will end up with a lot of crumbs in your melting chocolate and they won’t look quite as pretty! You’re welcome to divide the directions into 2 parts and make the truffles the day or night before, then dip them in chocolate the next day.

Dip the Oreo Balls in Chocolate

Melt the candy coating or melting chocolate in the microwave for about 1 minute 20 seconds. Stir gently until smooth, returning to the microwave in 15 second increments, if needed.

Dip each ball in the chocolate and place back on lined pan.

Decorative Toppings for Oreo Cream Cheese Balls

Place 2 TBSP white chocolate in one sandwich bag and 2 TBSP dark chocolate in another. Microwave for 30 seconds. Gently massage the bag. Snip a tiny corner of the bag and drizzle opposite chocolate onto each Oreo ball. Remove cream filling from reserved Oreo cookie.Place cookies in a bag and smash. Sprinkle each Oreo Ball with cookie crumbs.

FAQs

Why are my Oreo balls falling apart? ›

Oreo balls are falling apart: The chocolate is too hot. Let the chocolate sit for a few minutes to slightly cool down and then try again.

Do Oreo balls need to be refrigerated? ›

One of the main ingredients in this Oreo cookie ball recipe is cream cheese, so they need to be refrigerated. They shouldn't sit at room temperature for more than two hours at a time. Store the cookies in an airtight container in the fridge for about two to three weeks.

Why are my Oreo balls soft? ›

Make sure you store the Oreo balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you leave them on the counter, the chocolate will get soft. You want to make sure they are chilled until ready to serve.

Can you freeze Oreo balls in the freezer? ›

Because Oreo balls are kept cold in the fridge, they last for 2-3 weeks in an airtight container. If you want to get a jumpstart on holiday baking, you can make these 3 months in advance and freeze them. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.

How do you keep Oreo balls from sweating? ›

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. To prevent the chocolate sweating, do not store in the fridge or freezer – however this means that the filling will be soft.

Why are my Oreo balls cracking? ›

If you coat something that's super cold in something hot like melted chocolate, the center will expand quickly as it warms up, causing the ball to crack. The best way to avoid this is by using dough balls that are not super cold and melted chocolate that's not super hot.

How many cups are 36 crushed Oreos? ›

Thirty-six Oreos weigh 14.3 oz (405 g). Crushed, that is about 3 cups.

Can cream cheese be left out? ›

Cream cheese should not be left out longer than two hours at room temp (or higher than 40 degrees F) because it then becomes a playground for nasty bacteria like salmonella. No one wants a trip to the emergency room over the carrot cake. If it's been out for longer than two hours, toss it—better safe than sorry.

How much does it cost to make Oreo balls? ›

My recipe makes 12 servings for just $1.09 per serving or about $13.11 for the entire recipe. The recipe is so simple. It's perfect for little hands to help. Just whip up the Oreo filling, roll them into balls, dunk them in melted chocolate, and drizzle with festive colors – easy peasy!

Why do my Oreos taste stale? ›

Taste: A stale, rancid taste can signal that the Oreos should not be consumed. Texture: Oreos that have lost their signature crunch or have become too soft may be past their best quality. Visual Signs: Discoloration or mold growth are definitive signs that Oreos have expired and should not be eaten.

How long to soak Oreo? ›

Although the amount of time to perfection depends on preferred sogginess levels and milk fat content, the Utah researchers determined that 3 seconds was enough to thoroughly saturate the Oreo without losing structural integrity.

Can you mail Oreo balls? ›

These Oreo truffles can be shipped, but it does require some extra materials. Most bakers who ship their treats prefer to use a cooler lined with ice packs, which is then placed in a cushioned/lined shipping box.

How to crush Oreos? ›

Crush the cookies in the bag with a rolling pin.

Take a heavy rolling pin and bang down on the bag of cookies. You can tap, whack, or roll the pin over the cookies. Keep doing this until the Oreos are as crushed as you'd like. You should get about 1 cup (100 g) of crushed Oreos.

How many Oreos are in a pack? ›

A standard 14.3-ounce package of regular Oreo cookies contains 36 cookies. The larger 19.1-ounce family-size package contains 48 cookies.

How do you keep Oreo crust from falling apart? ›

Keep in mind that the finer the crumb, the better the crust will hold its shape. You should get about 2 cups of crumbs (packed), or about 250g. Stir in the melted butter, and then press the mixture tightly into a pie dish.

Why is my Oreo crust crumbly? ›

Big chunks of oreo can make the crust too crumbly.

Why are my Oreos getting soft? ›

If they are stored in a humid environment, the cookies may absorb moisture and become soft. Additionally, if they are stored in an airtight container for too long, they may become stale and soft. If you notice that your Oreos are getting soft, it is probably best to throw them away or use them for baked goods.

How do you cut an Oreo without it breaking? ›

Try freezing the oreos first and then cut with a sharp knife. Let the oreos warm to room temperature again.
