What Is Zoom! Teeth Whitening?

Zoom! teeth whitening is a type of in-office teeth whitening that uses a peroxide whitener and a special “Blue LED” light to whiten your teeth. In just a single appointment, you can whiten your smile by up to 8 shades.

The process is quite simple to understand. First, your teeth will be professionally cleaned to prepare for the treatment. Then, one of our doctors will place a covering on your gums and lips to protect them, and expose your teeth. The teeth will be coated with whitening gel and the Zoom! UV lamp will be placed on top of your teeth for a 15-minute interval.

Then, the whitener is rinsed away, and the process is repeated up to three times. We will check the brightness of your teeth between each treatment to adjust accordingly, and ensure you get the results you want.

After your final treatment your teeth will be coated in a paste that helps reduce sensitivity, and you’ll be free to go. Your doctor will give you some instructions on how to care for your smile for the next few days to avoid stains.

How Does UV Teeth Whitening Work?

Zoom! teeth whitening works by utilizing a combination of hydrogen peroxide gel and UV light. UV light doesn’t actually whiten the teeth all by itself. Instead, it expedites the whitening process by exciting the molecules in the peroxide gel, allowing the whitening agents to penetrate the enamel more quickly. This might also result in a longer-lasting sparkle than traditional teeth whitening treatments.

How Long Does It Take To See Results With Zoom!?

You will see results with Zoom! immediately. In just 45 minutes, it’s possible to whiten your teeth by up to 8 shades.

In some cases, patients with severe stains may need to come back for multiple appointments at Carmel Mountain Dental Care. Your doctor will inform you if this is necessary during your initial cosmetic consultation.

Note also that very severe stains or internal stains may not be treatable with Zoom! and other chemical whitening methods, and may require alternatives like cosmetic crowns, dental veneers, or dental bonding.

Does Zoom! Teeth Whitening Cause Sensitivity?

Teeth whitening treatments all cause mild sensitivity in the teeth. This is thought to happen because peroxide whiteners weaken the enamel very slightly, exposing “dentinal microtubules.” These small structures connect the outside of your teeth to the nerves inside, letting you feel sensations as you eat and chew.

So, after teeth whitening treatment, these tubules are exposed and can contribute to teeth sensitivity. However, brushing properly with fluoride toothpaste will strengthen your teeth and eliminate sensitivity after just a few days. To help with any discomfort, your doctor may also recommend using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste like Sensodyne until your teeth feel normal again.
