When you’re stuck in a rut of negative energy, it can be difficult to pull yourself out. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to bring lots of positive energy into your life. First and foremost, it’s important to get in the habit of thinking positively, which can dispel negative feelings and energies from your life.[1] Next, make a commitment to prioritize your own thoughts and feelings ahead of others, so you can stay on top of your own mental health. Finally, make some positive physical changes in your environment, like redecorating your home or going for a run. Always remember—when it comes to your life, your happiness is most important.

Thinking Positively

  1. 1

Expect that good things are going to happen to you. Wake up each morning anticipating that something great is on the horizon. Keep your mind in a positive, hopeful place as you go throughout the day, and notice if the events in your life seem especially upbeat. In many cases, a positive attitude can naturally welcome positive energy into your life, turning a mediocre day into a great one![2]

    • Keep your expectations realistic. A positive attitude probably won’t make you a lottery winner, but it will make you feel happier throughout the day!
    • For instance, tell yourself aloud that you’re going to have a good day as soon as you wake up in the morning.
  2. 2

Toss away your negative thoughts and feelings. Take a moment to focus on what’s dragging you down. When you think about negative topics, you end up filling your mind with negative energy. Instead, make a resolution to accept what you cannot change, and try to move forward with more positive thoughts.[3]

    • For example, if you’re worried that you did poorly on a test, make a specific effort to let that worry go. Tell yourself, “I can’t change what already happened today, so I’m going to make my day better by hanging out with a friend later.”

  3. 3

Don’t needlessly dwell on your problems and illnesses. While sickness and other long-term problems can be a pain to deal with, try not to invest any negative energy into these prospects. Instead of thinking about the uncontrollable parts of your life, focus on the aspects that you can control, instead.[4]

    • For instance, if you feel like you’re coming down with a cold, try not to focus on your symptoms. Instead, view it as a free excuse to relax, enjoy a hot beverage, and watch TV!
  4. 4

Try to laugh and smile whenever possible. Get in the habit of smiling on a daily basis. Invite positive energy into your life by actively seeking out the wholesome and funny aspects of each day. Make an effort to fill your life with positive people who always bring a smile to your face.[5]

    • For example, try to get in the habit of sincerely laughing at your friends’ upbeat stories.

Did you know? Smiling also has scientific benefits. Whenever you start grinning, dopamine and serotonin are released in your brain, which work to make you feel happier.[6]

  5. 5

Say thank you for all of the good aspects of your existence.[7] Take a moment to bring some positive energy into your life by thinking about everything that you’re thankful for. When you’re alone, acknowledge everything in your life that makes you happy, like your friends and family. You can also write out a list of everything that makes you happy, if you want to have a physical reminder on hand.

    • For instance, try and think of every positive aspect of your life, even if it’s mundane. Taking a moment to spend time with your pet, or spending some time doing a hobby can all be considered positive and good moments in your life.
  6. 6

Forgive those who have wronged you in the past. Think about all of the people who have hurt you, whether it was recently or a long time ago. Do you still harbor negative feelings toward these individuals? If so, you could be welcoming negative energy into your life without realizing it. Take a moment to mentally forgive the people who have hurt you, and expel their influence from your life.[8]

    • Forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to trust or like the person (or people) in question. It means that you’re absolving yourself of the issue and the emotional turmoil that comes with it.

Putting Yourself First

  1. 1

Commit to loving yourself. Take a moment to think about all of your positive qualities, and write them down in a list. Jot down anything that you’re good at, whether it’s a sport, a hobby, or being a good friend. While it may be difficult to think of good things about yourself, remember that you’ll be inviting positive energy into your life once you do.[9]

    • For example, try telling yourself: “I may not have a lot of hobbies, but I’m really good at getting things done quickly and efficiently.”
    • Try saying positive things about yourself out loud. Even if you struggle to believe what you say, hearing these affirmations can help you build up your confidence.[10]
  2. 2

Don’t compromise your own happiness for other people. While it’s important to think of others, try not to forget about yourself in the process. Before agreeing to do something with a friend or family member, decide if it’s something that would make you happy or not. By avoiding stressful activities and tasks, you can invite a lot more positive, productive energy into your life.[11]

    • For instance, if you don’t like traveling but your friends invite you on a weekend trip in the city, put your foot down and explain why you would rather not go. Say something like: “I really appreciate you thinking of me, but I feel really drained and stressed out whenever I travel. I hope you have a great time!”
  3. 3

Take active steps to achieve your goals. If you want to accomplish something big, think of actionable ways you can reach these goals.[12] Don’t expect to fulfill your dreams in a week or a month—instead, divide your goals into small, achievable baby steps. As you accomplish each step, take a moment to celebrate the little victories![13]

    • For example: If you want to become fluent in another language, you’ll need to develop a study plan first. Start by learning basic grammar and vocabulary, then work your way up to speaking conversationally.
    • Lots of practice is the best way to improve your language skills.
  4. 4

Aim to be mindful and present every day. Keep yourself rooted in the events and activities of your daily schedule. Instead of doing chores and work-related tasks automatically, take a moment to consider how and why you’re doing these things. Prioritize a feeling of awareness in everything that you do to welcome more productive, positive energy into your life.[14]

    • Mindfulness isn’t a task that you can check off a list. It’s a lifestyle that you incorporate throughout your day, starting from when you wake up.

    Oprah Winfrey, Entertainment Mogul

Be mindful about the energy you bring to an environment. "You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and you're responsible for the energy that you bring to others."

  5. 5

Set clear boundaries with others on a regular basis. Perform frequent maintenance on your friendships by determining how far you want the relationship to go. Whenever you to speak with a friend or acquaintance, pay attention to your own thoughts and feelings. If anything a person says makes you uncomfortable, take a moment to address your emotions.

    • Do this on a regular basis, so your negative feelings don’t snowball into something worse.
    • For example, if you dislike it when a friend calls you “sweetie,” be sure to speak up.

  1. 1

Maintain a healthy diet and exercise schedule. You can’t bring lots of positive energy into your life if your body is unhappy. Exercise regularly to release endorphins, which fill physically fill you with a positive feeling. Also, try and eat fresh produce on a daily basis, as well as foods that are rich in protein.[15]

    • Exercise doesn’t have to be boring. Try joining a gym or working different muscle groups to change things up!
    • You can always go for a run to ease your worries. You can add a lot of positive energy to your life by exposing yourself to fresh air, as well as some beautiful natural sights.[16]
  2. 2

Decorate your home with Feng Shui techniques. Bring more positive energy into a room by changing the decor and color scheme. By using Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of living in a peaceful and harmonious environment, you can redecorate your living space with warm, natural colors (e.g., soft yellow, light green). If you’re up for a larger DIY project, consider repainting the walls in your home to be a soothing environment that oozes positive energy.[17]

    • You can use Feng Shui techniques in all physical spaces in your life, like your bedroom, workspace, or car.

Did you know? Certain symbols and items are considered especially lucky, like ladybugs and elephants. Try incorporating these creatures into your home’s decor.

  3. 3

Play upbeat, encouraging music on a daily basis. Set up a speaker or sound system in your home and queue fun music to play while you’re up and about. Motivate yourself to do household chores and other typically boring tasks by singing and dancing along to catchy tunes. Try creating a big playlist of all your favorite jams, so you don’t have to change the song manually.[18]

    • Link your phone to a wireless speaker to play music from an app or streaming service.

    Expert Answer

Typically when we find ourselves in a rut, it's because we need to reassess our values. Values change as we change in life, and so often when we're feeling stuck, it's because our values have changed and we haven't caught up to what those are. So the first step would be to reassess your values and, secondly, look at what needs to be removed in order to create a clearer pathway for us to have those values met.
