France to lift state of emergency in efforts to allow political dialogue in riot-hit New Caledonia

  • AP

French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to lift the state of emergency in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia. Macron's office said the move is meant to allow political dialogue following the unrest that left seven dead and a trail of destruction. The statement said the state of emergency won’t be extended “for the moment." It said the decision aims at “enabling meetings of the various components” of pro-independence movement FLNKS, the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front, and allow elected officials and other local leaders “in a position to call” for lifting the barricades to go there and meet with protesters. California evangelical seminary ponders changes that would make it more welcoming to LGBTQ students

  • By DEEPA BHARATH - Associated Press

An evangelical seminary in Pasadena, California, is considering revisions to its sexual standards. According to a draft of those changes obtained by The Associated Press, these changes could mean more freedom for LGBTQ+ students at Fuller Theological Seminary. The seminary's president formed a task force to look into the college's sexual standards after a senior administrator was fired in January for refusing sign the unrevised document. Two students filed lawsuits in 2019 and 2020 after they were expelled for being in same-sex marriages. A spokesperson for the seminary has said no solid proposal has come before the board for a vote and that the revisions are still being discussed. Davis Riley gets 1st individual PGA Tour win by 5 at Colonial in final group with Scheffler

  • By STEPHEN HAWKINS - AP Sports Writer

Davis Riley shot even-par 70 while playing in the final group with Scottie Scheffler, and still won Colonial by five strokes over the world’s No. 1 player and Keegan Bradley. It is Riley's first individual victory on the PGA Tour. Riley finished at 14-under 266. Bradley had a closing 67 Sunday, and Scheffler shot 71. Riley began the day with a four-stroke lead, and gave up one stroke with a bogey on the second hole. But that was the closest Scheffler or anybody else would get all day. The 27-year-old Riley’s only other PGA Tour win came with Nick Hardy to win the Zurich Classic team event in New Orleans last year. Coca-Cola 600 underway with Justin Allgaier filling in for Cup Series points leader Kyle Larson

  • By STEVE REED - AP Sports Writer

The Coca-Cola 600 got underway at Charlotte Motor Speedway without one of NASCAR’s biggest stars. Kyle Larson, the Cup Series points leader, is busy competing in the rain-delayed Indianapolis 500, but is hopeful of making it to the race in time to complete NASCAR’s longest race. Justin Allgaier started the race in Larson’s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, forced to go to the back of the field because he did not qualify the car. Larson had hoped to run the double and join Tony Stewart as the only drivers to completing all 1,100 laps at Indianapolis and Charlotte. But a four-rain delay in Indianapolis made that impossible. ‘Furiosa,’ ‘Garfield’ lead slowest Memorial Day box office in decades

  • By LINDSEY BAHR - AP Film Writer

The Memorial Day box office is cruising for a two-decade low. “Furiosa,” the Mad Max prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, claimed the first place spot for Friday-Saturday-Sunday with $25.6 million. That is according to studio estimates on Sunday. Warner Bros. is waiting until Monday to release its four-day estimates. That left room for the weekend's other new opener, “The Garfield Movie,” to claim No. 1 for the four-day holiday weekend with $31.9 million. Aside from Memorial Day in 2020 when theaters were closed due to COVID-19, these are the lowest-earning No. 1 movies on this weekend in 29 years.
