Should I get A1 or B1 tooth shade? ›

If you're planning to get your teeth whitened professionally and are trying to choose a teeth-whitening shade, B1 and A1 are both excellent choices. They represent the whitest tooth shades that occur in nature—so they look natural—while giving you a radiant, healthy-looking smile.

Using a four-shade guide, most people have teeth that are A3 in color, meaning that they are somewhat reddish brown. This is considered the average, natural tooth shade.

One commonly used reference tool, however, is a shade guide. Within each range are different levels of darkness — which results in a chart detailed enough for almost everyone to find their exact tooth color on the guide. To use such a guide, simply match your current tooth color to the corresponding color on the chart.

The three most common shades that are used are what I call natural (A2), natural white (A1), or Hollywood white (B1) and the two uncommon ones are what I call natural dark (A3) and sparkling white (010).

B1 is the whitest natural tooth colour compared to all other natural shades of teeth. However, it is not the whitest when including bleached 'Hollywood' shades. It is often sought after by patients desiring a whiter, more vibrant smile, surpassing natural tooth whiteness for an exceptionally luminous appearance.

Hollywood White Teeth

In such a situation, the teeth are bleached. The bleached shades of whiteness include OM1, OM2 and OM3. OM1 is the lightest, OM2 is darker, and OM3 is the darkest shade of bleached white.

Yellow Teeth

This is the most common color of teeth. A light-yellow color indicates a strong healthy smile. The natural color of your dentin, the layer of tiny tubules that lies beneath your enamel and connects to the dental nerve in each tooth, is yellow.
